With over 2000 hours and 7 years of professional one-on-one tutoring experience, I have a vast amount of knowledge and techniques I can call on to help my students understand difficult concepts. Throughout my education I have tutored those younger than me and worked with some of the brightest young minds, some of whom became top of their year in the highest ranking universities. I am flexible in tutoring a range of abilities, and have experience from mentoring Year 7 students just learning algebra, through to Year 12 students starting A Levels, all the way to STEP tutoring and preparing for Oxbridge interviews and entrance exams.
Most of my tutees are A Level or GCSE students and this level is where my speciality is, however I am very adept at working with younger students, particularly those who are looking for a deeper mathematical understanding. Many of my students attend a top 10 independent college, and I get a lot of business through parental references among local sixth form colleges and schools.
In 2019 I started a role in a local state primary school where I work during school hours as a KS2 Maths Specialist. This involves assisting pupils during their Maths lessons and preparing them individually for their KS2 Maths SATs. I have had a very positive response from this by teachers, parents and pupils, and I have seen through school-collected data a huge improvement in mathematical understanding in the cohorts that I have worked with.
Results
While my tutoring style focuses on more than just learning for exams, and I strongly encourage having a deeper mathematical understanding, excellent exam results go hand in hand with an excellent understanding. Raw results are a tricky metric for assessing the quality of a tutor as different students have different aims when starting tutoring, however clearly excellent tutoring ends up with excellent results and a minimum of a pass (which is often a significant goal). I am proud to say that my results have been very strong, with a 100% pass rate from all my students, and many going significantly beyond this and their own personal goals.
All of my regular tutees in 2017/18 passed and reached the target set by them, some going beyond this. Of course, this is mostly down to the student’s work, commitment and motivation, and I found it extremely pleasing to see them progress throughout the year.
In 2018/19, I received wonderful reviews from my students, all of whom improved on their expected grade before I started working with them. 2019/20 was a strange academic year due to the global pandemic, with many of my students having their exams cancelled. However, many stayed on with me to widen their mathematical knowledge, ready for the next stage in their education. I also took on students during this time in order to assist their schools in giving an accurate predicted grade. Despite the UK government’s failed algorithm for assigning results, all of my 2019/20 cohort achieved their desired outcomes.
2020/21 was once again a strange year with cancelled exams, however despite the turmoil I had an excellent set of results, including one of my A Level students transforming from a predicted E to a B (enabling them to proceed with their desired university course), and another getting the STEP grades needed for his place at Cambridge. All of my students achieved their desired results, with some improving on this further.
In 2021/22, all of my A Level students achieved the grades needed to get into their first choice university, a wonderful overall result. My GCSE students all got equal to or higher than the grade they were aiming for when they started tutoring, with a 9, two 8s and two 6s (both aiming for a pass). One of my GCSE students only started in May just before the exams and had only 3 hours of tutoring as a confidence boost, and in this time her confidence grew to take her from a predicted 3 to a 6 as her final mark – a true testament to how important confidence is in Maths.
In 2022/23, I had an exceptional set of results for all my students, with all 10 who were taking exams this year being very happy with what they had achieved. All 6 GCSE students received at or above their target grade for Maths and Mathematical subjects, with one student improving from a predicted 4 to a 9 in Statistics GCSE. For my A Level students the story was much the same, with all of them reaching at least their target grade set when starting tutoring and finishing the year very happy with what they had achieved. In particular, one of my students was aiming for a C and achieved a B, and another achieved 95% across their entire Maths course.
In 2023/24, results were excellent, with all of my students achieving what they needed for their next step, and some surpassing this. One of my students (whom I had been mentoring since he was in Year 10) managed to secure and reach an offer to Oxbridge and achieved an A* in what was quite a high grade boundary year.
I am pleased to say I have a 100% pass rate.
Testimonials
“Our son did well in GCSE maths and decided to do A level. Whilst we knew it was a big leap our son felt it was the course for him. The jump to A level proved to be a real struggle. We engaged Tom and wow, what a revelation! Tom is able to explain a topic in multiple ways until the student gets it, something my son’s college was unable to do. Our son got an excellent grade at A level and we feel much of that achievement is down to Tom’s knowledge and teaching style. If you are looking for an excellent and approachable tutor, Tom has to be at the top of your list!”

“Tom is outstanding as a tutor. I can not believe the difference in my daughter’s confidence with her maths in such a short period of time. She has just started her GCSE’s and we were lucky enough to find Tom at a point where she was feeling overwhelmed with revision. Tom is not just a tutor that can help with the logistics of learning and understanding a subject. He is also kind and genuinely cares about his students emotional well-being. Tom feels anyone can achieve and be the best they can be. I would recommend Tom one hundred per cent.”

“I wish I could leave more than 5 stars! Tom has been tutoring my son for A Level Maths and Further Maths for two years. My son recently achieved A* Maths and A* Further Maths at A Levels. Our son went from being OK at Maths and even wondering whether he should even choose Further Maths as an A Level option to getting an A*. Tom has been very supportive, knowledgeable and professional throughout. Without question Tom’s input has been the integral factor in our son’s amazing achievement. We are very grateful for Tom’s help and would wholeheartedly recommend him for any other potential pupils. Thank you Tom!”

“Tom played a huge role in helping me with STEP and getting accepted to Cambridge for Engineering. He had a solid grasp of the problem-solving aspect that was required and was always understanding and patient. When I was stuck, he was very good at giving well thought out hints that didn’t reveal the answer but helped to figure out the method to get there which is an essential skill for STEP. He was also quick to reply to emails if any questions arose outside of lesson time. Thanks Tom, I would highly recommend him to anyone.”

“Tom was the main reason my daughter went from 38% in her Further Maths mocks to 78% in her A Level, which earned her an A grade. Tom is patient, extremely competent, thorough in his work and an exceptional tutor that I can recommend to anyone without reservation.”

“Tom has tutored our daughter over a couple of terms whilst she has been at a local sixth form. She lost her confidence with maths and slipped behind and Tom has been amazing at bringing her back on track and boosting her confidence and understanding. Tom is reliable, punctual, patient and a thoroughly recommended maths tutor. My daughter feels confident enough to go it alone now but I won’t hesitate to call him back if needed.”

“My daughter only had three lessons with Tom so far, but already feels a lot more confident with what they have covered together. He’s clarified aspects that she had not fully understood at school, and helped her develop better ways to approach some exercises. I have been impressed with his teaching style, providing helpful hints when needed but letting her come up with her own solutions. I recommend him very highly!”

“Tom was an outstanding tutor. His math skills proved to be invaluable, he helped me immensely not only with understanding individual topics, but also with exam technique. He had multiple ways of explaining things if I didn’t understand one method. Tom was always on time and well prepared every session I had with him. He helped me with C4, C3 and M1. Due to the help received by Tom I got an A in C4, A in C3 and B in M1. I would highly recommend Tom over all other Math tutors.”
